We went to see a JV high school football game last night. It was fun, despite the fact that the home team gave away over 50 points in a shutout.

At one point in the second half, the wind shifted. A cool wind came out of the north, off the glacier, and it felt like fall to me for the first time this year. It was delightful, especially at a football game. Fall might be my favorite season.

While the visitors were cementing their victory, a rather large bird flew over the field, about twenty feet up. At first, while it was silhouetted against the sky, I thought it might be a large raven. When it passed in front of the hills, though, and the color of its plumage became visible, it was clear that it was actually a somewhat small bald eagle.

I pointed it out to my wife as it slowly glided over the game. She loved it. She said it was the first time she’d ever seen one in real life.

How do you beat an experience like that with two great symbols of American culture?
